Welcome to the Buffy Robinson website. Here you can see the largest ever collection of my Batik work. My canalside Gallery in Shropshire is open by appointment, so please email me if you would like to arrange a visit and I would be happy to show you around.

The Flower Seller

The flower seller's boat is a riot of colour.  Each weekday she is there in all weathers, selling flowers from one end of the boat and vegetables from the other.

Framed and back-lit (51mm x 43mm inc frame) , this original Batik 'The Flower Seller' is FOR SALE in the Gallery for £250
If you would like to buy it, send me an email.

Crocus

This little crocus Batik, a very simple design with only three colours, has been both a successful framed original and a lampshade.

If you would like to commission a framed Batik or lampshade of the Crocus, or any other of my flower designs, to be made specially for you, just email me.

I can also supply the Crocus design in paperweights, click here for prices, then email your order to me,

The Green Boat

On my last trip to Venice with my mum, she liked to go off in the afternoons to galleries or museums, leaving me and my camera free to walk over every bridge and down every alleyway of this amazing city.  I couldn't believe my eyes when, down what looked like a complete dead end, I came across this arched river entrance with this stunning view.  It was such an unknown backwater that no boats had passed and the water was glassy smooth, the reflections like a mirror.  Who needs to be shut inside galleries when outside is like this?

When I got back home and into my studio, I worked from the photograph I took that day and the resulting original Batik is now framed, (19"x15"inc frame) back-lit on its own custom-made light-box and FOR SALE in my Gallery for £350.  If you are interested in buying it, just send me an email.

Cat on the Hearthrug

This is one of my very early cat Batiks.  My own cat's a tabby (spookily like this one painted long before mine was born)  and I'm fascinated by the tabby interlocking markings.

An ideal cat, as far as I'm concerned, should have a white bib and four perfectly white feet and in nearly all of my cat paintings they seem to have both!

I remember years ago offering my brother an original as a thank you for all the help he had given me and he chose this one.  I do though still have a few 6x4 cards and prints of this cosy cat if you would like to buy any, click here for prices and then just email your order to me.

Greek Taverna

I love the fierce contrasts of the light and shade and the depth of the colours you get in the hot Greek sunshine.  Have a seat outside this little taverna and order yourself an ouzo!

The original Batik 'Greek Taverna' is now SOLD but 7x5 cards and signed prints are available to buy, click here for prices and then email your order to me.

The Fishermen

This large original Batik shows an idyllic river scene with two fly fishermen landing their catch as the swans swim serenely by.

Framed, mounted and back-lit, this large original Batik 'The Fishermen' (33" x 23" inc frame)  is FOR SALE in the Gallery for £395
If you would like to buy it, send me an email.

You can also buy 7x5 cards, prints, and gift tags, all featuring The Fishermen, click here for prices and then email your order to me.

Water Yeat

I was commissioned to create this Batik painting of this beautiful Lake District house by the owners.  At the time it was run as a guest house and the framed Batik hung above the fireplace in the visitors' lounge where guests could buy cards, paperweights and prints of the original to take home as mementos of a wonderful stay.

Water Yeat is no longer a guest house but you can still buy products featuring this design directly from me, click here for prices and email your order to me.

Tall Ship

The tall ship is moored at Gloucester Docks near the National Waterways Museum with Gloucester Cathedral is in the background.  This is another of my studies of reflections, a subject which I am constantly fascinated by.

This original Batik 'Gloucester Docks' is now SOLD but I can still supply this design in 7x5 cards, prints, paperweights and gift tags, click here for prices and then email your order to me.

I did a second Batik of the 'Tall Ship' (13"x16") moored at Gloucester Docks, with a slightly different colour-way and showing the beautiful old warehouses reflected in the water.

This original Batik is as yet unframed, is FOR SALE in the Gallery for £150

Sweet Peas

As on many of my flower Batiks, I have used extensive cracking of the wax to get the lively marbled background for these sweet peas.

The Sweet Peas design is available in 6x4 cards, prints and paperweights, click here for prices and then email your order to me.

Although this original Batik handmade lampshade (8"x8"dis)  'Sweet Peas' is SOLD, you can commission one like it if you want.  Just send me an email if you are interested.  Prices for this design and other flower designs start at £95.

Tulips & Wall

Framed and back-lit, this original Batik 'Tulips & Wall' (19" x 15" inc frame) is FOR SALE  back-lit in the Gallery for £150
If you would like to buy it, send me an email.

The wax resist process of Batik makes the finished work translucent, a bit like stained glass, giving the colours real depth and vibrancy when back-lit.  This is particularly dramatic with these bright red tulips against the terracotta brick wall.

Pembroke Castle

Charlie (the dog) and I have just got back from a fantastic weekend walking with friends on the coastal paths of Wales and it reminded me of my trip down to Pembroke Castle when I was commissioned by the Castle to do this Batik.  It's in a wonderful setting on a peninsula with the sea on three sides.  They have the original Batik there, on display back lit.

If you are interested, I have 7x5 cards, prints and gift tags of 'Pembroke Castle' which you can buy direct from me, click here for prices and then email your order to me.

Thistle

For the background of this 'Thistle' lampshade (8"high x 8"dia) I have used the Batik crackle to create texture, working the purple dye into the cracks.  The hand-made original Batik lampshade (8" tall x 8"diameter)  SOLD at the Summer Exhibition Preview in the Gallery .

If you are interested in commissioning any of my flower lampshades, just let me know by email.  Prices for flower designs start at £95.

The 'Thistle' design is also available in 6x4 cards, prints and paperweights, click here for prices and then email me with your order.

Cat on the Bed

Designed originally for my greetings card range, I have experimented in this picture with dyeing the back of the cloth with grey dye to get the shading in the white pillows.  The grey 'catches' the parts of the cloth where the wax was cooler as it was put on and hasn't been able to penetrate.  I always work on a light-table so I can see while I am working exactly how the Batik will look when it is finished and back-lit.

Framed and back-lit (45mm x 60mm inc frame), this original Batik 'Cat on the Bed' is FOR SALE in the Gallery for £325
If you would like to buy it, send me an email.

The image is also available in 7x5 cards, prints and paperweights, click here for prices and then email your order to me.

Cyclamen

I always like to do my flower Batiks on the finest smooth Egyptian cotton which gives me the delicacy I'm after, as well as being able to get the fineness in the cracks.
To get that lovely Batik 'marbled' effect, I put the piece in the fridge, which gives me really fine cracks.  Then, when it is nice and cold,  I screw the cloth up quite hard and then really work subsequent dye colours into the cracks in white background, with a brush.

This original Batik 'Cyclamen' is SOLD but I am always happy to talk about commissions of this or any other flower design, either a framed back-lit picture, or a hand-made lampshade, just email me if you are interested and we can discuss sizes and prices.

The 'Cyclamen' design is also available in paperweights,  click here for prices and then email me with your order.

The Grand Canal

One of many of my small Venetian studies, this shows two gondolas with their bright red leather seats and green tarpaulins, moored on the Grand Canal across the water from the large palazzi.

Framed and back-lit (37mm x 45mm inc frame) , this original Batik 'The Grand Canal' is FOR SALE in the Gallery for £250
If you would like to buy it, send me an email.

Grand Canal Lampshade

I designed and made this lampshade of the Grand Canal as a big 'thank you' for my sister and brother-in-law who took me to Venice just after my mum died.  Before she was ill, my mum and I made several life-changing trips to Venice and this was a good place to go, although infinitely sad that she wasn't there too.

Each of the six panels depict a typical  Grand Canal palazzo so each day you can turn it round for a different view.

While we were there, I took photographs from the vaporetto as we went up the Canal from Piazza San Marco, planning this lampshade in my mind.

I wanted to get details of the variety of styles of Venetian architecture of these ancient palaces.

After waxing in the white and the grey for the stonework details, I dyed each panel individually to get those classic Venetian colours.  From then on each panel then had its own colour scheme.

I love the Moorish shapes of the windows standing alongside the classic Palladian ones - Venice is such a mix of cultures.

The large 12" diameter lampshade took me weeks to complete and was a real labour of love.  It was a technical challenge too on several levels, so I can't see me repeating it anytime soon!

Hot Air Balloons

For over 20 years I lived in the Ribble Valley in Lancashire near Clitheroe in the shadow of Pendle Hill.  Pendle forms the natural backdrop for all local views and here we have some brightly coloured hot air balloons flying over Pendle and the fields of sheep.

Although this original Batik is SOLD, I can supply the 'Balloons over Pendle' design as signed prints, click here for prices and then email your order to me.

This is another hot air balloon design called 'The Balloon Race'.

The original Batik 'The Balloon Race' has been SOLD but the image is available in paperweightsclick here for prices and then just email your order to me.

Cornflowers

I'm often asked "Why do you work in Batik and don't just simply paint your pictures?  Isn't painting a lot easier?"  One of the things I answer is that I can get effects with Batik which I would never achieve in watercolour or acrylic.  This simple little Batik of cornflowers illustrates that perfectly.  The wonderful marbled texture of the background, with different colours let into the cracks, gives me that magical Batik 'signature' which I would never be able to paint.

The original Batik 'Cornflowers' is mounted and framed & back-lit (15"x13"inc frame) and has SOLD in Summer Exhibition for £150.   If you would like to commission a  'Cornflowers' Batik just send me an email.

The design is also very successful as a lampshade.  For all my flower lampshades, prices start at £95.  Let me know if you would like to commission a 'Cornflowers'  lampshade made specially for you.

The 'Cornflowers' design is also available in signed prints, click here for prices and then email me with your order.

Jungle Tabby

I had great fun with the setting for this cat, cracking the wax to let in the dark colours in for the branch.  To get the texture I want, I screw up the cloth into a ball.  The wax cracks, creases and quite often falls off altogether.  Before dyeing it, I must repair cracks that I don't want on the cat itself.  The overlapping leaves are done with overlapping brush strokes of hot wax, then a darker colour dyed on the back of the cloth.

The Batik original of 'Jungle Tabby' is SOLD (I seem to remember it went to Germany) but you can still buy the image in 7x5 cards, prints, and gift tags, click here for prices and then email your order to me.

Village Cricket

This is so English - a village cricket match being played on the green beside the church next to the pub.

The original Batik 'Village Cricket' is mounted & framed (28"x21"inc frame) and backlit with it's own light-box.  It is FOR SALE in my Gallery for £295.  If you are interested in buying the 'Village Cricket' original, send me an email.

The design is also available to buy in paperweights and signed prints.

This original Batik lampshade 'Village Cricket' was done from the same design, with the panorama continuing right around the lampshade - a lot of work!.  Although this one is SOLD, you can commission one to be made for you, just email me.  Prices for a lampshade in this design start at £250.

Cow in the Buttercups

This is such a gentle, peaceful country scene.  The colours of this Batik painting are vibrant when back-lit, with the bright golden yellow buttercups contrasting with the green.

The original Batik painting 'Cow in the Buttercups' SOLD at the Summer Exhibition Preview in the Gallery  but this contented cow features in paperweights and gift tags, click here for prices and email your order to me.
